Teck Response Actions

2010 Black Sand Beach (BSB) Clean-up

Black Sand Beach, located on Washington state-owned land, accumulated granulated slag over time. Clean-up involved removing approximately 5,000 cubic yards of granulated slag from a prescribed area, transportation of these materials from their point of origin near Northport, Washington to their place of disposition in Trail, British Columbia, Canada; and restoring the affected work area. Teck performed the project as a voluntary independent interim action in consultation with the WA State Department of Ecology.

2015 Time-Critical Removal Action (TCRA)

TCRA activities were planned on 14 properties and one tribal allotment, which included 29 decision units (DUs), located in northeastern Washington near the town of Northport. Removal action was to remove lead and arsenic contaminated soil within each DU that posed an unacceptable risk to human health. 26 DUs on 13 properties and one tribal allotment were cleaned up. TCRA activities were conducted under the direct oversight of EPA.

2017-2018 Voluntary Removal Action (VRA)

VRA work conducted by Teck expedited the removal of lead- and arsenic-impacted soil that may pose an unacceptable risk to human health from eight decision units (DUs) on four privately owned properties in the Northport, WA, area under the direct oversight of EPA.
